Bring Ahmad Home
Kiama, New South Wales, Australia
Join us as we create a new beginning for Ahmad in Australia.
Ahmad was a nurse, working hard, saving enough money to study medicine. He wanted to serve his community in Afghanistan by becoming a doctor, but in 2013 at the age of 22, he was kidnaped by the Taliban. He managed to escape but the Taliban had his identity papers and blacklisted him.
With his life in danger and his family threatened, Ahmad escaped his country and made his way to Indonesia. This was where he applied to UNHCR for Refugee Status.
After his experience with the Taliban, Ahmad questioned the Islamic religion and converted to Christianity. Consequently, he learned a number of languages and now volunteers at the Jakarta hospital by translating and supporting refugees who are sick.
In Indonesia Ahmad has no rights, cannot work, study or marry.
Also, as a Christian in a Muslim country, he is extremely isolated and spends most of his time alone.
Fortunately, he managed to connect with a group of refugee from Adelaide, Melbourne, Canada and Kiama who have become family to him. Over the years, we have come to know Ahmad and found his good nature, values and character to be exceptional. Even though his circumstances are difficult, he is a caring, grateful and genuinely kind young man.
We are a group of 9 Australians who have been supporting Ahmad during his long wait and are determined to bring him to Australia where he can live a safe life free of the fear of persecution and death. Ahmad has been waiting 5 years and now he is 27. He has been isolated for far too long: his young life wasting away.
Our application for a humanitarian visa under the Community Support Program is underway. We are all very excited. Ahmad can finally come to Australia to live on the beautiful south coast so he can join and contribute to our community.
The cost of the visa package is $31,000. We have already raised just over $3000 and have borrowed the money to get us to stage 4, which we will soon have to start paying back. The good news is that Ahmad’s visa has been approved, so we are now just waiting for the paperwork to be completed.
We know that Ahmad will make a huge contribution to our community as he is keen to work in the health sector and hopefully study medicine after he has settled in. But Ahmad is also happy to do any work available and has been offered casual placement when he first arrives with Green Connect. They are a social enterprise that grows healthy food as well as supporting refugees by offering them work.
We need your help to bring Ahmad to Australia so he can live a life of freedom. Thank you!
Ahmad is one of 65 million displaced people in the world today. By supporting Ahmad, you are taking local action towards a global problem. What if communities all over the world decided to do the same?
